The process of painting a home is not as easy as some people see. Of course you don’t have to afraid of it. It’s just a matter of having in your mind the basic steps you should take and besides the technics, you should know that the right tools make the right technician. So, in the next section will provide you with the tools that you are going to need when you decide to paint your inside or even outside of your home.
Brushes, rollers and other aids for walls and ceilings
In order to have the best painting results, you should know that every type of painting and also every step of this work needs the right tools, those that have been tested and established in the professional field.
With the right tools and aids, the process of painting a room is a quite easy one. If the surface has much dirt on it or traces of mold it should always be cleaned, even by using a stain insulation. If the surface is porous and brittle, then you need to stabilize the priming or remove the old paint. It should also be considered the occasion when it is necessary to trowel the wall.
This is a system that frees you from the need of crouching every now and then in the paint tray. It is making use of a pump that sends the paint through a tube and then from the container to the paint roller. This way you do not need to dip the roller into the paint and by this way you can avoid the relevant drips.
Paint-specific adhesive tapes can ensure you with a smooth and clean “cut” of the paint, at certain boundaries between two surfaces, for example between the walls and a door or even a window. Polyethylene films are used to protect the floors and furnitures from dust or drips and splashes. They are fixed with adhesive tape to stabilize them and they are also available in large dimensions.
For the shaping and also the processing of the substrate, you should know that there are appropriate tools for each case, tools like spatulas, trowels and various types of them. There are also ready-made trowelling putties that makes it easy to create smoother surfaces. In case you have deeper cracks, there are special tapes and sealants in the market as acrylic one’s, silicone or polyurethane.
A basic painting set
Unless the case that there are any special conditions in your house, the basic equipment that should normally be present in your home laboratory includes:
- a basin or tray for paint
- an 18 cm roll
- a spatula
- paper tape
- some type of coating film
- a razor
- a number of brushes, round and flat
Fur and synthetic rolls
This easy change system facilitates the replacement and also washing of the cylinder. For viscous colors the polyester rolls like mohair, velvet and polyamide are suitable. You will find that there are special rollers that is used for specific applications:
- the thin rollers for different types of radiators
- the round ones for cuts and corners
- the curved roller for painting the pipes
There are also additional accessories that we can and should use in the painting process:
- roller drain racks in the color bucket
- additional long poles that can be simple or telescopic
The paint pad is a tool that we can use for surfaces of all dimensions. The paint is taken from a special basin and then its layering is done in one and always at the same direction. The color “tank” of the roll is something that can be filled with the help of a funnel. The small roller is usually equipped with some kind of parallel guide that is useful for pulling straight lines.
When we have to do with large surface work, priming or painting of the surface is very important to be done with a brush that has increased color storage capacity, a characteristic that depends on the arrangement of the bristles.
The brushes with bent handle, meaning the crooked ones are necessary in places where the access is difficult and are used mainly in the painting of the radiator bodies. They are usually made of synthetic and natural hair. The capacity of the paint containers should not be higher of the one of 14 liters, because in another case they become very cumbersome. The grooves on the solid surfaces facilitate drainage.
When we use rolling racks, they should perfectly fit the size of the bucket. In the case they are smaller, they are going to sway here and there. A built-in grid on the lid of the container saves us material.
Various tools and aids
The so-called paint pad is a tool that we often use. They are available in the market in sets of 3 or 4 sizes or even individually. Its surface is some kind of velvet while on the side it has guide discs, in order to ensure the linear demarcation. Other systems usually combine a roller with a paint tank, making it quite more relaxing to paint at high altitudes, as they manage to almost eliminate up and down in the stairs.
Brushes for surfaces and corners
Brushes vary and they depents on their size, their hair and also shapes. Remember that the size and shape that we select, depends on the surface that we have to paint: square brushes for example spread the paint in a better way on large surfaces. Hair is something directly related to the type of color. Generally, the natural hair brushes are used for solvents that contains solvents and the synthetic ones for water solvents application. Remember that we never use natural hair for plastic color.
Containers, boats and grills
Remember that not all buckets are suitable for the process of painting. Especially in the case when a roll is used, only the square buckets or grills can serve the situation. These type of containers are made of durable plastic and the good quality ensure that none of them will break and nothing will stick to them. The dry color can comes out with a simple pull. The boats have streaks in the paint store in order to drain the roll. The large buckets do this with grills.
We hope to have helped you with every painting task you have in mind. Remember that it may seems difficult at the begging, but later you will see that it is just a job like every other that needs certain conditions and tools in order to be done right. Go on and enjoy this beautiful process.
