3 Basic criteria for successful choice of home and business color

painters - Gikas Painting

Choosing the right colors is admittedly a difficult task. Few can do it successfully and even fewer are professionals painters who have taken painting seriously. This is the main reason why we constantly see the same neutral shades in homes, shops, offices, restaurants, cafes, etc.

However, using the right color palette can literally transform a space at the lowest possible cost. Even more important is that the right color choices for your home space can positively affect your mood.

In a professional space, color is an even more important parameter, as it plays a key role in attracting customers and marketing your business, while inappropriate choices can prove to be disastrous!

Important painting clarification

When one hears about color in architecture and interior design, his mind goes to the intense shades of the basic colors and rightly scares him. Many have such examples in mind! In no case do we mean something so bad when we refer to the color in the interiors!

A balanced and harmonious result in no case results from 10 bright colors, mismatched with each other and applied to large surfaces!
There are thousands of shades in a colored fan and few of them are really bright! With the right combinations we can create pleasant color palettes.

After all, when we talk about color study of a space, we refer to the choice of harmonious combinations that do not tire or upset, but instead create pleasant emotions. Or, to put it better, with the right handling of colors and knowledge of psychology, we can cause exactly the impressions and emotions we want!

The 3 basic criteria on which a successful color proposal is based:

  • The wishes of the user
  • What does space require to stand out?
  • What do you want to achieve

1. The wishes of the user

The first criterion should be what you want to live or work in this area. As much as this sounds obvious, most of the time it is not.

Mistakes that are often made are:

  • Your desires are ignored, as fashion demands otherwise or so everyone does, and you try to keep up. In this case, you are doomed to live in a place that may not satisfy you, does not inspire you and many times, is indifferent to you or even repulses you. This is a disastrous mistake, as it has been scientifically proven that being surrounded by our favorite colors makes us happier – and vice versa.
  • Your tastes and desires are followed to the letter, as a result of which bad, inharmonious and balanced spaces emerge, which in addition can cause you problems. As much as you love red, you will not sleep easily, nor will you work efficiently in a red room. A good choice for a bedroom that we want to warm, while at the same time it will calm us down.

In a professional space, things are more complicated, because you will have to take into account more parameters as we will see below. If your spouse’s favorite colors are fuchsia and green and you paint your office with them, then you will probably have a hard time convincing your prospective clients of your seriousness and reliability.

2. What the space demands to be improved and to stand out

Color is an important tool for landscaping if used properly. Taking advantage of the properties of the colors and applying the appropriate shades on specific surfaces we can intervene:

  • in the shape of a space – making an elongated space look more square
  • in its size and height – making a small space look bigger, a low ceiling getting taller or vice versa
  • in oncoplasia – Playing with the shades we can highlight or cover elements that bother us, such as beams, columns and fractures, turning a problematic space into more interesting and attractive.
  • in the brightness of the space – The notion that white, cream or yellow are the only options for a dark space is not correct.

There are many shades that can brighten or, many times, reduce the brightness of a room or business space. Especially the second, that is the decrease in brightness is often overlooked. And yet, a room with large openings and south orientation, which is not shaded enough, can be unbearable if very light shades prevail.

It is not a solution to close shutters or lower awnings to sit comfortably or work in an overly bright room. An elegant gray-green wall color is an excellent choice for relaxation.

3. How many times do you not feel that you are too cold in a place?

Most of the time, in addition to poor heating, the wrong color choices are also responsible. White, gray and pastel shades of cool colors, if not combined with warmer colors and materials can turn a space into icy. It has been found that we feel up to 2 degrees lower or higher temperature, depending on the colors that surround us. The vibrations of the colors affect in addition to our psychology and physiology.

The warm colors are suitable for dining rooms, since in addition to giving warmth, at the same time they open the appetite. It is no coincidence that we characterize places that are warm and earthy colors as warm and welcoming. So we can “warm” or “cool” a space (while saving on heating or cooling) by choosing the right combinations of colors and materials.

Especially in business spaces and especially in waiting areas, where the customer will spend a lot of time and we want to create the best impressions, we should take this parameter very seriously. An intense brown-orange can warm a cold dining room, enliven the conversation and whet the appetite of our guests.

  • how clean a place looks (and is) – How many times has it not occurred to you that a place looks dirty or that it has been painted for years, due to the failed shade of its walls?

White spaces (walls, floors, tiles, furniture) get dirty very easily and are difficult to maintain and clean. If you do not want your kitchen to look like a sterile laboratory and need constant cleaning, do not be fooled by the bright and snowy images you see in magazines and blogs.

Although many are impressed, this all-white kitchen is cold and sterile and will definitely need constant cleaning. Also, some yellow-beige and cream painting shades look dirty and old-fashioned, without being. It is good to avoid them.
